McGregor BFA’s history starts in 1965, when the Bureau for Financial Analysis (BFA) was established as part of the former Institute of Business Administration at the University of Pretoria. The BFA’s main activity and primary source of income was research and comparative studies for clients in industry.

By 1992, competition had increased as more financial consultants had started to enter the market who could also offer this service to their clients at low cost. The BFA decided to expand and commercialise its major asset: A comprehensive database of standardized financial statements from JSE-listed companies. BFA-Net (Pty) Ltd was set up as a private sector partner to develop and market data products and associated software.

BFA-Net soon developed a strong reputation for high-quality data and analysis, with a web site that is still one of the most popular and well-respected financial data resources  in South Africa.

In 1998 media company Naspers bought a controlling interest in BFA-Net and bought out its competitor McGregor Information Services. Both companies and their staff were merged into McGregor BFA.

The combination of BFA’s vast historical database and the Naspers culture of innovation has enabled us to launch a series of new products and services for South Africa’s investment community. We have been known as the highest-quality data provider in the local market since we launched our data feeds in 2000, and delivered our first fully web-based solution in 2002.

In 2011 we launched Expert, a ground-breaking solution that combines unparalleled depth of content, analytical functional, integration and global access. We will continue to use our technology edge to open new markets in Africa and create the best tools for our investment community.
